Kaban

Tiamat ve Marduk

Yazılım mühendisleri ikiye ayrılır: Gece yarısı kabanla sistem odası terminali başında hata düzeltmiş olanlar ve diğerleri...

O zamanlar VPN ile bağlanıp çalışmak yoktu. İş yerine gidilirdi. Kar yağınca hemen paydos verilmezdi, servisler gelemezdi, dolmuşa binilirdi. Trafik tıkanırsa, inip karda Levent'e yürünürdü.

Gençtik, 2-3 yıl tecrübeli belki.

Azdık, kişi başına düşen sorumluluk çoktu: Mesela ben ithalat, ihracat, görünmeyen kalemler ve kurumsal kredilerden sorumluydum.

Bekardık, cevvaldik... Dolayısıyla, bayram, tatil, yıl başı nöbetlerinin müdavimiydik.

Geç vakitte, tam eğlenirken veya uyurken, aklımızdaki son şey işken, birden telefon çalardı:

"Yıl sonu batch programı hata aldı..." derdi operatör.

Taksi tutup Maslak'a, ofise giderdik. Sistem odasına geçip, doğrudan canlı ortam terminalini açar, problemli programı okumaya başlardık. Kaban üzerimizde... Çünkü sistem odası ayazı diye bir gerçek vardır. Donmadan, felç olmadan hatayı bulmak ve düzeltmek gerekir.

Muhasebe departmanı bir defter-i kebirin borç/alacak karakterini ters işaretlemiş, bu nedenle bakiye hatası alınmış filan olurdu. Sabah 3'te telefonla onay alıp canlı ortamda veri düzeltip programı çalıştırır, bitmesini beklerdik. Kabanla...

Bugünlerde her şey daha başka. Biraz fazla yumuşadı her şey.

Mottoları "Don't crack under pressure".

Direkt lise fiziğini baz alırsak, birkaç seçenek beliriyor: (a) sert olmak, (b) esnek olmak, (c) iç basınç ile dış basıncı dengeleyebilmek.

Hareket etmek.

Sana ait lezzeti vermek.

Ve tat almak.

Freedom and Simplicity

I like stones, ancient cities, mythology, philosophy.
I like words, thoughts.
I like action, directness and power.
In this December, I'll be 40.
I have no rules, or boundaries.
I'm not engaged or dedicated to any community or a leader.
But I studied leaders, poets, writers, sportsmen, artists, generals, prophets, gods and goddesses.
I've been trying to  build myself up in my own ways, following my own morals.
I have values.
I give credit to authenticity, intelligence, knowledge, learning, freedom, aesthetics, achievements and flexibility.
I love living, I glorify life.

This week, Jean Pierre Mustier, the CEO of UniCredit, visited YapıKredi.
A good looking, smart man.
During his presentation, he of course touched to many important points in banking, Turkey, YapıKredi, UniCredit etc.
He shared his vision, motivation...
But, one thing was taken me strongly: His emphasis on simplicity.
He is supporting this notion so much that UniCredit defines itself with the following motto:

"We are a strong pan-European Group with a simple commercial banking model and a fully plugged in Corporate & Investment Bank, delivering our unique Western, Central and Eastern European network to our extensive client franchise."

Then I asked him the key pillar of simplicity. His answer was:

"Focus on the high priority objectives and eliminate the minor ones"

I'm impressed. He was talking in the same manner with Bruce Lee whom I respect a lot. Here is the Lee's words about simplicity:

"The art of Jeet Kune Do is simply to simplify. Jeet Kune Do avoids the superficial, penetrates the complex, goes to the heart of the problem and pinpoints the key factors. Jeet Kune Do does not beat around the bush. It does not take winding detours. It follows a straight line to the objective. Simplicity is the shortest distance between two points. Jeet Kune Do favors formlessness so that it can assume all forms and since Jeet Kune Do has no style, it can fit in with all styles. As a result, Jeet Kune Do utilizes all ways and is bound by none and, likewise, uses any techniques or means which serve its end."

Mustier's measure of simplicity is explainability. "If you cannot explain it in seconds, it's not simple" he said.
I have thought on his words since his fruitful session. I discussed this with some of my colleagues and I came up with some additions. Marking the most important goals, knowing what you want and omitting the unnecessary, low priority and complicated details are very crucial for simplicity indeed. However, these just define the clear objective and/or use case of the system you are to build.
I believe, you need to engineer complex details well for achieving a simple solution. For example, in user experience, having only one push button for sending any command to the system looks very simple. But I can guarantee you that there are zillions of invisible sensors, software modules, system control units, cognitive interpreters, very large scale integrated circuits, solar power collectors, signal processors running fast Fourier transformations in milliseconds working under that tiny push button, in order to provide simplicity. I can say that simplicity is well engineered complexity.
We've got to know that everything is highly technical and everything is complex. If you want simplicity, you have to examine and master complexity. So "You have to know the rules to rewrite the rules".

I want to combine this simplicity objective with our number one value in YapıKredi: Freedom.
Three years ago, I addressed a speech on "freedom in YapıKredi" to our teams. Key takeaways were:

  • You can find the word "freedom" in poems, songs, movies, anthems but it's very rare to find a value called "freedom" in a big bank's annual report. So embrace its importance
  • Be a free person in the office: Think, learn, discover, unlearn, decide and act freely
  • As a free person, take the responsibility of your actions, words and decisions because freedom always comes with the responsibility in the baggage
To conclude, I am a happy professional and a happy man because I am where I belong to intellectually: An enterprise where I am free and I am expected to develop simple solutions. Like many years ago, when I was a kid, watching a Bruce Lee movie, exhibiting "freedom, directness and simplicity".

Law & Order

We are living strange days.
Days that teach us the lives, we were thinking they are rising on strong pillars, are just the simulations and illusions. In theory, I have already been aware of the concept of perception based contexts surrounding us. However, experiencing it at first hand shocked me deeply. It's just a real life experiment which makes me feel my life is an experiment with the conditions, set by others.

The feeling of safety, order, trust, security, truth, crime, responsibility, good, bad... everything has just been mixed. I belong to no one. I'm a member of no camp. The only important thing I know is I need to provide a safe environment for my family.
But...
It is not upto me. It's beyond my will and capability.

I believe that the life is something, people need to overcome the minor personal issues in their daily routines such as killing the pain in their heads, finding the right pair of shoes for their bags, taking their cars from service depot fast etc. The human condition itself is a complex thing enough to deal with. Therefore, big narratives are not needed actually. There's no absolute right or wrong in most of the categories that we can understand.

Reality is far from us.
Simulacra.
We are floating in the pool of the signs and symbols referencing nothing real.
We are watching the world from the window which is as narrow as a life time of an average human being and assuming the values, virtues, states, instutions and everything we think we can understand is stable, permanent and strong. But they are not, they just seem so. Widen the window for 200 years and see the change...

It's a paradox.
I watch the crowds yelling, moving, humming, provoking each other...
I watch high levels of emotions driving blocks of people.
I watch the leaders.
I watch the followers.
And I see the behavioral patterns that are natural and primitive and expected.
And irrational.
What we need is our lives. Our authentic and "so called" peaceful lives.
What we need is the feeling of freedom where the existence of the biopower is proven.
What we need is a fresh breath until our death.

Burn

A few days ago, Fazıl Say was in court for the accusation of insulting the Islam by sending a couple of messages in Twitter. I will not tell all my feelings and thoughts on this process because I am afraid of being  in the same situation with Mr. Say and I am censoring myself.

However, I am just going to portray the act of tweeting according to my understanding: Twitter is a platform where its users can create private areas for themselves. Only the ones, a user allows can follow that user's messages. Besides, followers follow a user on their free will. Therefore, twitter is not an arena where you can impose your opinions to the people who are not willingly to get the messages from you. No one can force another one for anything. Plus, a user can convert its profile into public mode so that any one can follow that user without the user's approval. Let's assume your profile in Twitter is your living room, a personal, secured place of your own. And you are writing some sentences on the walls of your living room. Some sentences are irreligious ones :) Days are passing, and some people walking in front of your house are knocking your door and asking you whether they can read the sentences on your walls. And you allow them to read. Some more days are passing, and you decide to open the curtains of your living room so the people outside can see the writings on your walls. Then one day, some guys who are able to read the messages on your walls feel offended because of the messages they read and they sue you :) That's what Fazıl Say is experiencing in the year of 2012.
Very smart, right?

Beyond all those, there is a tiny text box in Twitter where you can write your messages and send them to your profile. A man, a text box, a button. When a man who has a big number of followers writes a message in a text box in Turkey, he is in danger of being taken to the jail. It's great, isn't it?

Restricted Web Access

We, two engineers working as IT professionals for more than 10 years, were trying to read the most popular newspaper of our country by using our computers at the office. I was sitting just beside his desk and watching his actions...

He tried to check the headlines of the paper. Corporate web access filter denied his attempts due to the category of the pages he wanted to open. Some of the forbidden categories were  "Provocative Attire", "Entertainment" and "Media Sharing"... Too dangerous!

The paper was Hürriyet. The year was 2011. He was 38 and I was 33 years old. Our arrogant and nitwit web proxy controller application was very persistent about disciplining us.

My friend strived to open 10 headline links on the newspaper. The system allowed only 3 or 4 of them. And the things we saw on the pages, we succeeded to reach, were ugly guys and their boring words and some depressing news like that.

My friend's witty statement was outstanding:

"Hey Bora, what sort of a security concept is it? It blocks all the pages with joy and cheer but shows every possible disgusting men and their stories! Do we really pay for this system? It is a psycho! It must be broken. Look at that thumbnail: If it is a smiling lady, proxy stops that link; if it is a fat serial killer proxy lets me visit the page! "

After a simple black box test, his conclusion was correct: "It must be broken."

I know that it is a common story.
I discussed the problematic perspectives of this prevalent protective approach with my colleagues who are responsible for network security of the company several times. Unfortunately, we were not talking the same language :) So nothing got better.

We demand free communication everywhere! School, home, office, street...

What is the solution?

Türkan

- Who is she?
- Türkan SAYLAN. She was a physician, a professor, an activist supporting modern & secular life style and working on public health and educational issues very very hard.
- How old is she?
- She was 74 when the photo above was taken. She was born on December 13th, 1935.
- Where is she now?
- She is dead.
- When did she die?
- May 18th, 2009. A year ago.
- What's the cause of her death?
- Cancer was the apparent one ofcourse.
- Any hidden reasons?
- I think "yes". Lack of conscience might be one of supportive reasons. Why do you think she is indicating the "Time Out" in the picture?

The System We are in

Inter-related units which are working for a common purpose is called "a system" as defined in most of the books. According to this definition we need to point out the common purposes of our "very well designed" social system. I am looking around and cannot write down 3 common things for the society I am in.
Nowadays, I am reading a book: Liberty and the State, by Charles Kershaw Rowley. To be honest, it is not an introductory text for non-sociologists like me, but I am trying to understand the articles collected in the book by using my mathematics background. In this book, I am actually in the middle of it-not finished yet-and my reading speeed is about 5 pages/hour, it is very surprising for me to see the reality that as a free person it is not that easy to carry on your freedom in a society. I can hear the voices "Hey stupid! You don't need to be a sociologist for knowing that!" :) However, all I am trying to do is to understand the system, that affects "my being" most powerfully, in a scientific context. It is easy to utter the words of wisdom about life and society by using merely our personal experiences, in our daily life. But it is nothing! The only way to learn things and persuade the others is to listen and speak the language of the science in which the rules are very clear and simple.
In contrast, we are not actually reading that boring (!) stuff written by the snobs and following the myths and shaping our lives by the rules that look fuzzy, at least, for most of the intelligent ones it is easy to conceive the logical blanks, those become big question marks in time.
On the other hand, for an educated person it is not that easy to search all the scientific literature and learn all about social systems and design her/his life according to the things that learnt. There's no time! Life is short. So what will we do? Easiest answer might be the word "education". Use the education as a system for teaching the cumulative common information about life. And a subsequent question comes: "Who designs the educational system?". Yeah! A problem of trust to the authority that shapes our lives and we go back to the beginnig: How can I learn all the objective and true acquirements about social systems in a timely and practial way to dignify my life? Maybe a "supernatural" could summarize everything for us in a book. Maybe...
Or maybe a new technology would change the way we learn or the form of the information around and it becomes feasible to access and understand any information, any time. Maybe...
Maybe I should not insist on being so "definite free" in my life and let the life pass as it knows...
Or I could transform my understanding of freedom into a less free form...
Okay, okay. This is my first post and I might be going too far for a blog entry... I promise you that I will post more enjoyable things in time ;)
